Read paddle guide

Plain-English definitions for the specs and metrics you’ll see on our paddle pages - so “swing weight” and “PBCoR” actually mean something.

Performance

Spin (RPM)
Revolutions per minute a paddle can put on the ball in lab testing. Higher RPM = more spin potential, which comes mostly from the face texture and material.
Power / Firepower
How much pace the paddle generates for a given swing. We show it as a 0-100 index - higher means a hotter, more powerful face.
Control
How predictable and “soft” the paddle feels on touch shots (dinks, resets, drops). Often trades off against raw power.
Serve / Pop speed
Ball speed off the face on a full swing (mph in lab tests) - a proxy for drive/serve power.
PBCoR (Coefficient of Restitution)
A measure of the paddle face’s “bounciness” - how much energy it returns to the ball. Higher PBCoR = more power. Certification bodies cap it to keep paddles fair.

Weight & balance

Static weight
The paddle’s actual weight on a scale (usually 7.3-8.5 oz). Heavier = more power/stability but more fatigue; lighter = faster hands.
Swing weight

Lower swing weight feels quicker and more maneuverable.

How heavy the paddle feels while you swing it (its resistance to being swung, not its static weight). Higher swing weight = more plow-through and power but slower hand speed at the net.
Twist weight

Higher twist weight means a larger sweet spot.

Resistance to twisting in your hand on off-center hits. Higher twist weight = a more stable, forgiving paddle (bigger effective sweet spot).
Balance point
Distance (cm) from the handle end to where the paddle balances. Higher = more head-heavy (more power, less maneuverable); lower = head-light (quicker hands).

Construction

Core
The interior of the paddle - traditionally a polypropylene honeycomb, increasingly foam. It’s the biggest driver of feel: how the paddle absorbs and returns energy.
Core thickness
How thick the core is (typically 13-16 mm). Thicker cores are softer and more control-oriented with a bigger sweet spot; thinner cores are firmer and poppier.
Face / surface layup
The hitting surface material - carbon fiber (e.g. Toray/T700), fiberglass, or Kevlar. Carbon tends toward spin/control; fiberglass toward power.
Surface texture
The gritty coating or peel-ply finish on the face that “grabs” the ball to create spin. Certification bodies limit how rough it can be.
Thermoforming
A build process (unibody construction with foam-filled edge walls) that makes a stiffer, more powerful paddle with a larger sweet spot.
Gen 2 / Gen 3 / Gen 4
Loose marketing labels for paddle “generations”: Gen 2 = thermoformed with foam edge walls; Gen 3 = foam-injected/“propulsion” cores for more power; Gen 4 = newer full-foam core designs. Terminology varies by brand.

Shape & sizing

Paddle shape
Elongated (longer, more reach and leverage/power, smaller sweet spot), Widebody / Standard (wider, bigger sweet spot, more control), or Hybrid (a blend of the two).
Handle (grip) length
A longer handle suits two-handed backhands; a shorter handle leaves more face area (sweet spot).
Grip size
The circumference of the handle (in). Too small can cause you to over-grip; you can build up a small grip with overwraps but can’t easily shrink a large one.

Certification

USA Pickleball (USAP) approved
The paddle has passed USA Pickleball’s equipment standards and is allowed in sanctioned play.
UPA-A
The newer testing authority for pro/sanctioned play, applying stricter PBCoR/spin limits - some paddles have been delisted and relisted under it.
